I found this story on CNN
This officer was fired for beating an unarmed man on Bourbon Street in 2005. Robert Evangelist appealed the Louisiana Supreme Court, and the ruling wednesday allows him to return to his job as a police officer. Robert Davis' beating was recorded by Associated Press, and Evangelist lost his job as an officer. He was then charged with false imprisonment while armed with a dangerous weapon, and second-degree battery. As of July 2007, he was acquitted of those charges. Robert Davis' attorney is Stephen Bruno, who commented about Evangelist, after hearing about the appeals court hearing, saying, " He is not fit to be a school crossing guard. He does not have the moral character to be police officer, and have the power and the force to have a gun and a taser."
My first reaction to this story was; how could they let someone, who they fired for a reason, have his job back?
As I read this story I remember hearing about this man being beaten for no reason. This man wasnt armed, nor was he causing a threat to these officers. I also remember seeing this video on the news. I cannot believe this is happening. Cops are basically put on a pedistule. They get away with so many things that a regular civilion couldnt. Such as beating an innocent person. If this story was the other way around, and that man had beat the cop instead, then he would have serious charges against him. And there is no way possible that he would have gotten the charges dropped. Things like these are where some people get mad and disagree with it. I know there are so many people reading that story and thinking how awful this country is getting, and how this cop should not have gotten his job back. I dont believe this cop should have gotten his job back. The other cop involved, Lance Schilling, comitted suicide 2 years later. Why did he commit suicide? Did he know he did something wrong? Was he to ashamed to face the justice that should have been done. Maybe he didnt want to go to jail with the other people he put in jail. If only he would have waited a little bit longer, then they would have offered him his job back and taken all the charges away.
I hope someone realized how wrong this is and does something about it. I cannot believe something like this could happen. What does this tell other cops? That since their "cops" then they can do what they want, when they want. I feel for the man who was beat by Evangelist. Justice was not served in this situation. :(
