California has a new idea. Big John Toilet Seat and Support has found a new way to sell to more customers; the plus size customers. The original seats are made to be 14 inches wide, but the newest seats are now 19 inches wide; 2 inches taller than the standard seat. The report says, "With 72 million overweight Americans, the company says there's definitely a market for their product." Their business is up by 60 percent this year from last years numbers, and last years numbers were up by 50 percent. The company's motto is, "Your butt's not too big, your seat's too small." The weight capacity of these seats are 1,200 pounds, and they fit on the standard toilet. Kramer says he, "came up with the idea after realizing that the toilet seat hasn't changed in over a hundred years." Depending on where you shop, these larger toilet seats can cost you anywhere from $107-$170. The website for "Big John" is here.
My first reaction is how neat this is for someone to think about what would actually be very useful to more than half of our nation.
There are so many obese people out there. I'm not sure exactly what the numbers are but I know it is probably well over half of the people in the US. My toilet seat fits me perfectly and I have no complaints about it. But if I were overweight, I would want a toilet seat that fits me better. Everyone uses a toilet, so why not make one that is more comfortable for the higher population. This is a fact that America is the obese country, because we have so many fast food restaurants, and there are so many people who do not want to cook real food, or a lot of people who don't have time to cook between working or watching TV. Fast food is made so easily reachable that it's become part of our daily diets. There are McDonalds' everywhere, and in some towns you can't go around the block without seeing another one. I believe half the reason for the obesity is adults. Our kids are growing up eating what we eat, and what we feed them. We as parents should be teaching our kids what healthy foods are, and why they shouldn't eat fast food so much. There are thousands, if not millions, of kids out there who are obese and we are to blame.
It is sad though that we as Americans get all the freedoms we do, and we have all the luxuries we have, but we can't seem to stay in shape. Some people may just have a genetic thing where they can't be as skinny as the models on TV. But we can at least stay into shape. Since that will never change, I'm glad to actually see someone thing about the part of our nation that is the largest populated. I'm glad to see them be more relaxed when we do our daily routine or using the restroom. Now the next step out there is to make larger toilet seats for public restrooms.
