My husband had his spinal fusion done yesterday, but we'll still be in the hospital until probably Wednesday or Thursday. Surgery went fine yesterday, although the 3 hour surgery took 4 hours and the 45 min recovery time took 1 1/2 hours. The doctor/surgeon came out after his surgery and told my mother-in-law and I that the surgery went well, but there was a blood vessel that wouldn't quit bleeding. Most people who go through this surgery lose about 200-250 mililiters of blood, but Ray lost 850 mililiters. Which means he lost 4 times what normal patience lose. Doctor said he will keep an eye on him for the next couple of days and since he is young, his body should make more blood to make up what he lost, but if it doesn't then he will need a blood transfusion. 30-40 % chance of needing a transfusion, so we have been praying for the best. So far so good, no transfusion yet after 1 day.
Doctor also said the sooner Ray get's up and moving, the sooner he will be able to recover and get home. So Ray was up about 5 times last night, and 3 times so far today, although it is only 12:15 pm. He seems to be feeling ok, but he's in a lot of pain. His back feels better, which is a great thing, even though his stomach where they cut him open from the front, is hurting him the most. His stomach wound is the only thing that hurts him.
I'm happy to see he is doing well, and we can't wait to get home. I still want him to be in the bests shape possible to go home so he will be able to get up and go to the restroom and what not, because my little, 120 lbs body won't be able to lift him anywhere.
I'll keep everyone updated, although I don't think anyone actually reads these, it's nice to get it out there.
