I have had a hard time this week trying to figure out what I want to do with my schooling career. I first wanted to become a Nurse (RN), so I started at Southern as a nursing major. I’ve wanted to become a nurse since I was a little girl, partially because it’s something I’ve always remembered I wanted to do, and partially because it’s something my father always wanted me to do. I always told myself after I graduate High School then I was going to join the Air Force and become a nurse. Plans changed when I met my husband and decided not to join the military. After starting college as a nursing major I decided to do some shadowing at Freeman Hospital where I decided nursing was not for me. I found it very boring. Although I was shadowing in the Emergency Room, it didn’t seem like something I really wanted to do. So taking the English course I was in, I realized I really enjoyed English. I love writing and I love correcting things; this is where I decided maybe I want to become an English teacher. Not sure if I would want to teach younger kids, but maybe high school kids or even college. I love the psychology course I am in, and I have always been interested in psychology. I took a psychology course in high school and I loved it, and even 4 years later in college I still have the passion for it as I did before. I’ve been thinking lately that maybe I want to switch to become a Psychology Major, but I am having the hardest time trying to figure out what I could even do with a Psychology Degree. I don’t think I really would want to work as a psychologist, so I’m not sure how it would benefit me. I would love to be a legal secretary, but not sure what degree would be in my best interest for that goal. I don’t want to go as far as a paralegal, just a legal secretary/assistant. I would love a job like this.
Plus side, is my husband is starting school this summer, (a few weeks away), and he is going to major in political science, and minor in psychology. After getting his bachelor’s degree, he is going to go to a law school, which is 4 more years of schooling. After getting his law degree, he will have to do like 3-4 years under someone else. And then, he plans on starting his own law firm. My husband is very smart and I know he will achieve everything he wants.
So I guess my goal now is to major in English, and maybe minor in some computer skills (which I have no idea which department that even is) and get a job as a legal assistant somewhere, and in 10-12 years I can work for my husband. I just worry that I won’t like the literature classes I am required to take for my English degree.
