Woman Calls 911 to Report Herself as Drunk Driver

I found this story on KTLA News as well.
This happened in Neilsville, Wisconsin. This 49-year-old woman, Mary Strey, reported herself as a drunk driver to the 911 dispatcher saying, "I don't want to hurt anybody. I'm drunk." This call happened on October 24th this year. Strey's alcohol level was double the legal limit to drive. Deputies cited her for, "misdemeanor drunken driving." With of course the over legal limit alcohol level. December 10th this year will be her first court appearance. When she called 911 she told them she wanted to report a drunk driver. The dispatcher asked if she were driving behind the drunk driver she was reporting, and Strey replied saying, "I am them." She did follow the dispatcher's advice of pulling over to the side of the road and turning on her flashers. Strey then said she had been, "drinking all night long."

My first reaction to this story was laughter. This is the funniest story I have read on here yet. People do the darndest things. lol

People do some stupid stuff. But it is nice to actually see someone taking responsibility for being dumb. She knew she could cause a car accident, and possible injure someone, even being as drunk as she was. Most people when they get drunk either don't care because they are too drunk to, or they just don't realize what they are doing until it is to late. I'm think I would at least give her credit for at least realizing what she was doing was wrong, and she called for help, along with pulling over like she was suggested to do. She could have just kept on driving until something bad happened. Although she shouldn't have been drinking and driving in the first place. She did pull over, so I'm not to sure she should get into too much trouble for this. Because she called for help, and pulled over. She technically wasn't driving when the cops found her, but they are going to charge her for it anyways. Doesn't really seem to fair does it? I'm curious how her court case will go, what the judge will say, and if she will be charged with anything. I understand that what she did was wrong, but it does look also like she knew what she was doing was wrong, and she tried to get help. What is this going to teach others? People ARE going to drink and drive, but if they can call 911 to get the encouragement to pull over and not drive, then isn't that what would be best. If they charge her with drinking and driving, then that will put a message out to everyone else out there, that if you call for help, it may save lives, but you get busted as well.

I'm not sure my opinion sounds good. Because it sounds like I want to just let her off the hook for drinking and driving. But I think I actually just want to set an example to everyone else out there who will eventually drink and drive. You never know, this may save thousands of lives in the future.

  1. I think that it is funny that a lady would do that instead of just pulling over and calling a family member to help. She will still probably be convicted and have to pay the same consequences as those who are pulled over.

  2. I actually originally heard this on Chelsea Lately and i laughed my but off. I am sorry to say i do not agree with your opinion. If they let her go, do you know how many people are going to try this. Granted, i do give her credit because she did do the right thing, in one case, but she should have never have gotten behind the wheel in the first place, she could have killed or injured someone.
